The question was:
"Are those of us who give 10 percent of our income doing something not
required?"

You answered, "A simple yes or no to this question would be horribly misleading."

Why? The answer is, "No, tithing is not required for Christians."

It is not required for salvation, hence, it's not required.

For obedience? Dunno. Tithing is not like baptism, which is a command to be obeyed by Christians. However, even baptism is not a requirement for salvation. It's simply the first act that a follower of Christ takes in following.

Tithing? The Old Testament sense died with Christ on the cross. The New Testament joy of giving generously and sacrificially--that's what's available to us now.

Give what you want to give, as God leads. Don't let anyone tie you down to a commitment you can't make cheerfully.

After reading D A Carson's answer I concluded that he did NOT support the idea that NT Christians must begin their level of giving at ten per cent. He had ample opportunity to make a very positive statement and did not do so. Obviously he believes that better NT principles of giving should be taught.
